This is a combined review for both the Base Alpha™ Direct 90 Thermal Legging (Size Small) and the Shift Alpha™ Direct 90 Hoodie (Size Medium).
I bought these to use as warm base layers for sleeping and for layering on colder hiking days during a recent winter trip to New Zealand. I’m happy to report that they worked extremely well for both.
They were warm and comfortable to sleep in, while also performing really well on the trail. I used them as base layers while hiking in temperatures around 32°F (0°C). Once the temperature warmed up in direct sun, I was able to strip down to just the hoodie, which did a great job of dumping heat and keeping me comfortable.
Nick, the company founder, reached out to me directly to make sure I chose the right sizing for my needs. I’m 5'10" (178 cm), about 170 lbs (77 kg), with a 33" (84 cm) waist. After discussing the fit with Nick, I went with a Small in the leggings, which ended up being perfect. The waist fit exactly right, and the legs were fitted without feeling tight. Nick had explained that a Medium would give me a slightly looser fit, while the Small would be more fitted, and his recommendation was spot on.
I went with a Medium in the hoodie, and that fit perfectly as well.
Overall, I’m extremely happy with both pieces. They were warm, comfortable, breathable when active, and worked exactly as I had hoped for both sleeping and hiking. I would definitely recommend Lobtree and would happily buy from them again. As a side note, my wife has lovingly nicknamed the Leggings, which are the color green, as my “Grinch Pants” and I find that hilarious. Cheers!
Very well built, quite warm for the weight. Legs feel a bit tighter that I would have liked (feels more like a legging than camp pants). I would I liked a draw string at the waist to adjust the fit but in no way a deal breaker.
Love the shape of these leggings, that they aren’t too baggy. They’re comfortable to wear. I originally planned to wear these as sleep pants but I found them a little cold for that. They work really well for me as a warm layer under my regular hiking pants when it’s cold out. When there was a problem with my order Nick went above and beyond to resolve. Can’t say enough positive things about the customer service here!
